Whether you’re a huge Dota fan or you have never played a single game of Dota in your life, Free To Play is a great movie for gamers that deserves your attention. It’s a compelling story about three competitive Dota players who are all trying to win the first major free-to-play tournament.
Danil “Dendi” Ishutin. Clinton “Fear” Loomis. Benedict “HyHy” Lim. All three of these players tell their own stories leading up to the end. Now, I won’t give out any spoilers, but each story is well told and undoubtedly sucks you in. This movie evolves from being a simple story about a free-to-play tournament to an emotional adventure of success and failure. Valve put out this movie not to only show the potential of free-to-play games, but to show the potential of gamers everywhere. This movie really captures what every gamer has dreamed of and shows you that it is possible to play games for a living, with enough dedication.
Personally, I’ve never played a game of Dota in my life and hell, I don’t even like strategy games. But this movie really inspired me as a gamer. It taught me that gaming doesn’t have to be a waste of time just as many people tell us it is. We can utilize our skills with a mouse and keyboard, and not by filling our hours of paperwork for minimum wage. Now, of course I’m not saying that every competitive gamer makes a fortune, but they have the potential to. You have to work your ass off, generally with a team of people you trust more than anyone, to get where these guys got in the movie.
In conclusion, it’s a great movie with a compelling story. Even for people who aren’t a fan of gaming, I’d recommend it anyway.
